Fast Facts on the Canine -Human Bond

If you let your dog sleep in your bed, you are not alone.
According to a recent study by the American Animal Hospital Association, nearly half of American pet owners let their dog or cat snuggle up with them under the covers every night, and 52 percent of owners said they specially prepare their pet's meals.

Released late last year, the survey was conducted among animal owners who take their pets to American Hospital Association veterinarians. But the survey makes clear that love of one's pet hardly stops with that special bedtime privilege. According to the survey:

73% of owners would go into debt in order to provide for their pet's well being.

92% responded that the recession has not had any effect on the health care services they provide for their pet.

20% include their pet in their will.

62% responded that they celebrate their pet's birthday.
Of that 62 percent of pet owners who celebrate their pet's birthday, a whopping 51% sang "Happy Birthday" to their pet. (Some 9% reported they throw an actual birthday party complete with invited pet guests.)

47% of owners reported that they spend three hours or more of "quality time" with their pet per day.

52% include news about their pet or a photo of their pet in a holiday card.

67% said they felt guilty leaving their pet home alone.

47% sad that when they leave their pet alone they leave on a TV or a radio.

47% said their pet sleeps on their bed.

The survey failed to note, however, what percentage of pet owners gave their pets their pillow.
