Cat's Cats

Cat says that a 15 year old cat has already slept 10 years of his life!

- Colleen "Cat" Rutherford

Do you know what your cat is trying to tell you? Cats have many different ways of vocalizing. They purr, growl, hiss, spit, and meow with as many variations as they have personalities. Don’t forget their infamous silent treatment!

Certain breeds of cats are more vocal than others. Siamese cats are the most vocal of them all. They are usually non-stop talkers. Most cats have certain meows for certain things. One meow asks to be let outside; one asks to be fed; and one asks to have the litter box cleaned, etc.

Being in tune with your cat and knowing what the different meows mean can be important if he ever becomes ill. If a normally very vocal cat suddenly becomes very quiet, something could be wrong. The same is true in reverse. The meow could also have a different tone or be more dramatic than usual. Meows sometimes do just change. Being aware of your cat’s meow will enable you to detect changes that, along with other signs, may indicate illness. Any changes in your cat’s normal behavior could be cause for alarm and should be checked out by your veterinarian.

CAT’S CAT FACT:
Did you know that cats sometimes purr when they are in distress, scared, or in pain?
